What They Say

“You do not have to explain every single drop of water contained in a rain barrel. You have to explain one drop—H2O. The reader will get it.”

Write Like the Wind volume 2 by Aaron Paul Lazar

Getting Mileage Out of Your Older Titles

We writers have to start out somewhere. Our first books, whether published or not, can sometimes make us shudder when we go back years later to re-read them. Some writers don’t like to look at that early stuff, it just destroys their egos. I know how I felt when I took a look many years after writing my first novel. “Oh man, how could I have been that bad?” I’d used some of the “forbidden” words and had too may “to be” verbs and dialog tags in that first novel.

It’s a natural phenomenon and quite common, to tell the truth. And frankly, most of the time it’s not really “that bad,” it’s just you being too hard on yourself.

So, what do you do? Can you get a do-over?

Many writers are getting the rights back to their early books, some of which were backlisted or abandoned by traditional publishers, and they’re rewriting and re-releasing them in various venues. They are releasing their work as eBooks and audiobooks when they were originally just in print format, and lots of writers are jumping on the self-publishing bandwagon which has almost overnight become less of a dirty word and distinctly cooler and unquestionably much more “acceptable” in the publishing industry today.

Are you in that boat?

I’m still writing new books in my five series (you can see them all at, but I had a chance recently to retrieve the rights from some of my earlier books and I re-released them myself.

First of all, I re-designed all the cover art with a professional cover artist I adore. That was a great success.

Next, I polished the stories with refined writing skills. If I didn’t have audiobooks already produced, I started on that path, too.

Something really cool happened with the second book in the LeGarde Mystery series, Upstaged. When my audiobook narrator went through the manuscript, he came back to me with an observation. He said, “Aaron? There is SINGING in this book! What am I supposed to do with that?”

He referred to all the musical theater lyrics I wrote for my characters to sing in the musical within the mystery entitled “Spirit Me Away,” that Gus LeGarde “composed” back in the sixties when he was a student at the Boston Conservatory of Music. I’d forgotten about all those songs embedded in the text.

I decided to ask my daughter Melanie about this. She’s a singer with seven years of voice training and two masters degrees, who’s currently working on her doctoral degree in Boston (first doctor in our family). I asked her to write some songs to go with the lyrics, perform and record them, and release them as a CD to go with the book(s). She did it almost overnight, and I fell madly in love with the sixties style songs.

Isn’t that the coolest thing? The CD is entitled “Spirit Me Away,” and you can listen to the songs here. So, now the songs are embedded within the audiobook narration, will be offered as an accompanying CD, and are good enough that we are considering making this fake musical into a real musical.

I told you it was cool.

We do need to write the script based on the story within a story in Upstaged, get a good composer friend to write an overture, etc. for it, get the music transcribed, etc. and figure out how the hell you submit a musical to Broadway bigwigs, but we plan to forge ahead.

And all because I wanted a do-over. Neat, huh?

Can't you picture a bunch of young singers dressed in sixties attire, singing their hearts out? I can’t wait to see where this goes.

But the lesson here is, if you have backlists or older titles you’d like to see reborn, it really isn’t that hard. Don’t let the stories die. After all, they are a part of you, right? Authors are doing in droves now. Get your rights back, polish up the manuscript, hire a good cover artist, get into ACX to create an audiobook if you haven’t yet, and give your titles a new lease on life.
