What They Say

“Geniuses can be scintillating and geniuses can be somber, but it’s that inescapable sorrowful depth that shines through—originality.”
—Jack Kerouac

Interview with Bestselling Romantic Suspense Author Stacey Joy Netzel

Mystery Author Lynn Cahoon

What inspired you to write mystery books?

My books are more romantic suspense than straight mystery. In some you don’t know who the main characters are up against, and in others, you know the ‘bad guy/s,’ and the mystery is how do the main characters win in the end? I write romantic suspense because I love the thrill of the chase, figuring out who is opposing my characters, why, and how to get them out of the mess they find themselves in.

When you start a new mystery, do you plot it all out from the start (all the clues and red herrings) or does the story evolve as you write it?

Most of the time I have a general idea of start and end, and then figure out the middle as I’m writing. And of course, sometimes in the course of that middle, the end changes.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently writing in my other genre, contemporary romance, but I have a spin off series in romantic suspense that will be tied to my Colorado Trust Series. Book 7 in that series just released March 28th.

What’s the most interesting or unusual research you’ve done for a book you’ve written?

My Italy Intrigue Series had the best research. Book 1, Kidnapped, was inspired by a personal incident during my first trip to Italy back in 1996. For book 2, Betrayed, I went back to Italy with my brother on his business trip and we travelled the same route as my characters from Milan to Rome over the course of 11 days. And for book 3, Conned, I did A LOT of Google research on the city of Venice and its churches to come up with an action-packed Indiana Jones type suspense plot.

Do you have a favorite character from your books?

My favorite characters are usually the ones I’m spending time with during whatever book I’m currently writing. If I had to go back and pick one book...I had the most fun writing Nick and Rachel in Conned, book 3 of my Italy Intrigue Series. They each suspect the other is running a con, yet they have to work together while fleeing bad guys during a treasure hunt in Venice—it was a blast to create them and resolve their conflicts.

Although, I will say, recently Nate and Olivia from Illusion of Trust could give them a run for the money. Probably because it’s another fast-paced adventure that keeps the characters on their toes as they try to figure out who’s after Olivia.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Illusion of Trust by Stacey Joy Netzel

Illusion of Trust

A woman on the run with a billion-dollar secret that could save her father must trust a stranger who doesn’t believe in risking anything for family—especially not your life.

Olivia Brenner’s family is being ripped apart. Cancer took her mother a few years ago, and now her father’s been arrested for murder. She has evidence to prove his innocence—if she can stay alive long enough to get it into the right hands. When a sexy stranger saves her life, she has no choice but to accept his help. But can she trust a man who doesn’t believe family is worth fighting for?

Nate Wade has been betrayed time and again by those who are supposed to care the most. He protects himself by pushing everyone away, until one night with Olivia flips his world upside down. The vulnerable-yet-feisty redhead challenges everything he believes about the dreaded F-word, and he’s shocked to discover he cares more than he ever imagined possible.

Now he’ll risk everything to keep her safe and prove to both of them he is worthy of her heart—and the love of his own family.
