Interview with bestselling author Robin Perini
"I’m so honored to be asked to be here today. Thanks for the everything."
When you start a new mystery, do you plot it all out from the start (all the clues and red herrings) or does the story evolve as you write it?
I’m one of those crazy people who plans my entire plot out ahead of time. I love spreadsheets and charts!!! I also use a plotting board with colored posts. Blue for my hero; pink for my heroine and orange for my BBG (big bad guy). However…I almost always come up with red herrings that surprise me. That’s the fun of writing. The characters and story are simply there, and I interpret (.
What are you working on now?
I am just finishing up a book called Cowboy’s Secret Son, which is a Harlequin Intrigue romantic mystery/thriller. It’s about a Texas Rancher whose life was devastated when he lost his wife and unborn child to an unidentified kidnapper. Five years later he discovers he is father to an 18-month old and the kidnapper returns to terrorize him and everyone he cares about. It will be out in June 2017.
What is your typical day like?
I separate my days into day-job days versus non-day-job days. On day-job days, I wake up at five-thirty and write for 90 minutes. After work, I work out for an hour, then I head over to my folks’ house. My mother is in the final stage of Alzheimer’s disease, so I have dinner with them and help care for her. Then I go home and do it again. On non-work days, I try to write 4-5 hours and also care for my mom a few hours so my dad can attend support group and go to church. I try to fit in some social media and promotion as I can. The rest of the time I juggle what everyone else juggles (.
What’s the most interesting or unusual research you’ve done for a book you’re writing?
The research for FORGOTTEN SECRETS was very personal and unusual I suppose, because the concept of this book is that the only witness to a kidnapping is a grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease. My mother’s fight with this illness, and what I’ve learned about it in caring for her really colored the book, and I hope made this illness accessible. I also made the decision to donate 10% of my royalties received from each sale of this book to the Alzheimer’s Association and to work to raise awareness of the disease.
To that end I focus on three areas:
- Walk to End Alzheimer’s Fundraising
- FORGOTTEN SECRETS sales
- 1 Memory Challenge

Do you have a favorite character from your books?
I have a special place in my heart for Helen Blackwood, the grandmother in FORGOTTEN SECRETS who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. She is the witness to her granddaughter’s kidnapping. I used some of the symptoms from my mother’s battle to, I hope, give Helen a truth about her. Helen isn’t my mom, but how the family responds to her disease is reminiscent of how my family copes.
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block, and if so, how do you overcome it?
I don’t really suffer from writer’s block (just re-writer’s block (). Revision is just agony for me, and I can get stuck if I’m not careful. But if I’m searching for inspiration or ideas, I binge watch NCIS, Criminal Minds and Forensic Files while I am taking care of my mom.
I guess that’s it. I love to hear from readers, and you can reach me on my website at http://www.robinperini.com or any of the major social media outlets! Happy Reading!
