Interview with Author Shéa MacLeod
What inspired you to write mystery books?
I’ve been reading mysteries for as long as I can remember. Once I cleaned out the library of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, I was introduced to Agatha Christie. I’ve dreamed of writing mysteries ever since.
What style of mystery novel is your favorite (police procedural, cozy, etc.)?
Cozy Mystery. Hands down.
When you start a new mystery, do you plot it all out from the start (all the clues and red herrings) or does the story evolve as you write it?
Yes. LOL! It’s a little of both. I plot, but then things often take a left turn from there. In my current WIP, I still don’t know who the killer is!
What are you working on now?
The latest Viola Roberts Cozy Mystery. I’m also working on a new cozy mystery with one of my favorite characters, Branwen the Cupcake Goddess.
Do you prefer to write mystery series books or stand-alones?
Series. I love to revisit characters and settings. They’re like old friends.
What’s the most interesting or unusual research you’ve done for a book you’re writing?
I don’t know about “unusual,” but recently I needed a poison. I wanted something non-lethal that would make people ill and was easy to come by. I had to research various plant based poisons. Plants that were common to a particular area, what part of the plants were poisonous, and then what the symptoms were. Once I’d decided on the plant, I had to figure out the best way to administer it and how a regular person might extract the poison. I really hope the authorities never ask to look at my search history…
